Father’s Kidney Donation and SPARSH Foundation’s Support Help 20-Year-Old Overcome Kidney Failure.

For 20-year-old Mahesh (name changed), a fever and swelling in his hands and legs marked the beginning of an unexpected medical journey. Investigations revealed that both his kidneys had failed, leaving him dependent on dialysis and in need of a kidney transplant. His father stepped forward to donate a kidney, while financial assistance from SPARSH Foundation helped make the transplant possible at SPARSH Hospital’s Infantry
Road unit.
Mahesh’s treatment was managed by the hospital’s multidisciplinary team, including Dr. Satish MM, Dr. Partha P. Shetty and Dr. Dinesh. His treatment began with dialysis to manage kidney failure, initially requiring four sessions a week before the frequency was reduced to twice weekly. He subsequently underwent a kidney transplant using his father’s donated kidney. His care also included post-transplant follow-up and the removal of a
double-J (DJ) stent under local anaesthesia.
The repeated hospital visits and ongoing treatment placed considerable demands on Mahesh and his family as they navigated the medical and financial challenges of kidney failure. His father, a priest with modest earnings, came forward to donate a kidney to save his son. With limited financial resources and no savings to fall back on, the family struggled to meet the cost of treatment. SPARSH Foundation’s assistance helped address this financial barrier and enabled Mahesh to proceed with the transplant.
Dr. Partha Pradeep Shetty, Senior Consultant – Nephrologist and Transplant Physician, SPARSH Hospital Infantry Road said, “Mahesh’s treatment involved dialysis to manage his kidney failure, followed by a transplant using his father’s donated kidney. His care required coordination across the multidisciplinary team, from managing his condition before surgery to the transplant and subsequent follow-up. Regular monitoring, adherence to
prescribed medication and timely reviews remain essential to support his recovery and protect the transplanted kidney.”
Satyabrat Padhi, VP- SPARSH Foundation added, “Financial hardship should not stand in the way of critical care. In Mahesh’s case, the Foundation’s support helped the family access the transplant, bringing his father’s willingness to donate a kidney together with the expertise of the hospital’s medical team. Our aim is to make essential healthcare more accessible to families facing financial difficulties.”
Mahesh’s transplant was successful, and he is recovering well, no longer requiring dialysis.
His journey highlights how family commitment, specialist medical care and charitable assistance can come together to make life-changing treatment possible, even when financial constraints pose a significant barrier.
