RGUHS Takes Innovative Step to Raise Breast Cancer Awareness

Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) has taken an innovative initiative to raise awareness about breast cancer among the public and students. Emphasising the importance of recognising early symptoms and seeking timely medical care, the University has proposed illuminating prominent government and heritage buildings in Bengaluru in pink.

October is observed globally as Breast Cancer Awareness Month to highlight the importance of early detection, timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Through the proposed pink illumination of prominent public buildings and Affiliated colleges, RGUHS aims to draw public attention to breast cancer and reinforce the message that early detection can improve treatment outcomes and save lives.

The proposal submitted by RGUHS Vice-Chancellor Dr. Bhagavan B. C. has received approval from Deputy Chief Minister Sri D. K. Shivakumar, Medical Education Minister Dr. Sharanaprakash R. Patil, Greater Bengaluru Authority Chief Commissioner M. Maheshwar Rao, and Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister Tushar Girinath.

Awareness Programmes Across Affiliated Colleges

RGUHS also plans to organise breast cancer awareness programmes in collaboration with Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology and other leading cancer care institutions. The University intends to publish an educational booklet highlighting breast self-awareness, the importance of recognising symptoms, early detection and timely medical consultation.

The initiative aims to encourage women to prioritise their health, seek medical advice when they notice unusual changes, and understand the importance of appropriate screening and timely treatment.

Through these coordinated efforts, RGUHS seeks to extend breast cancer awareness beyond hospitals and healthcare institutions to college campuses and the wider community, strengthening public understanding of prevention, early detection and access to appropriate care.

A significant public health concern

According to the GLOBOCAN 2020 estimates published by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), approximately 2.3 million new breast cancer cases were reported worldwide in 2020, accounting for 11.7% of all cancer cases. Breast cancer remains a major public health concern, highlighting the need for sustained awareness and access to timely diagnosis and treatment.

Early detection, followed by appropriate medical care, can improve treatment outcomes. RGUHS emphasises the importance of breast self-awareness, professional medical consultation and screening as recommended by healthcare professionals, based on individual age and risk factors.

Through this initiative, RGUHS reiterates its commitment to preventive healthcare, health education and women’s well-being. The University hopes that the pink illumination of prominent public landmarks will serve as a reminder that awareness, early diagnosis and timely treatment can save lives.
